The short version
What's the difference between Tauri and Electron?
Electron and Tauri both build desktop apps with web technologies. Electron ships a full Chromium browser and Node.js inside every app. Tauri uses the webview already on the operating system, and a backend written in Rust. Almost every other difference follows from that choice.
Electron started at GitHub in 2013 as the shell of the Atom editor, and is now a project of the OpenJS Foundation. It powers Visual Studio Code, Slack, Discord, Notion and the desktop apps of Figma and 1Password. Tauri started in 2019, reached 1.0 in June 2022, and 2.0 in October 2024, which added iOS and Android.
Where they're the same
- Your UI is HTML, CSS and JavaScript, with any framework: React, Vue, Svelte, Solid, Angular, or none.
- One codebase ships to Windows, macOS and Linux.
- Both are free and open source, under permissive licenses, with no fee per app or per user.
- Both bundle installers, auto update your app, and sign it the same way: code signing and notarization are platform rules, not framework ones.
- Both are secure by default in their current versions: the UI can only reach the system through the APIs you expose to it.
Where they differ
- Size and memory. A small Electron app has an installer of around 80 to 150 MB, a small Tauri app a few MB. Tauri also uses less memory at idle, though the webview is still a browser engine.
- Rendering. With Electron, everyone runs the Chromium version you tested. With Tauri, your UI runs on WebView2, WebKit or WebKitGTK, at whatever version the user's system has, so you test on each.
- Backend language. Node.js and npm for Electron, Rust and its crates for Tauri.
- Mobile. Tauri 2 targets iOS and Android. Electron is desktop only.
- Maturity. Electron is ten years older, ships a new major version every 8 weeks in sync with Chromium, and almost any problem you meet has been solved before. Tauri's ecosystem is smaller and growing fast.
Who each one is for
Choose Electron if your team writes JavaScript and not Rust, if your UI is complex (an editor, a design tool, heavy canvas or WebGL) and must look the same everywhere, or if you depend on npm packages and Node.js native modules.
Choose Tauri if download size and memory matter to your users, if your team knows Rust or wants to, if your UI is simple enough for webview differences not to hurt, or if you also want mobile apps from the same code.
For a longer take, with the security model, packaging and updates, read Electron vs Tauri: which to choose for a desktop app.

Electron: 123,615 stars on GitHub today, since 2013. Tauri: 112,295, since 2019. Both passed 100,000 stars: Electron in 8 years, Tauri in 6.5.

Stars given each month, added up, from the GH Archive record of GitHub events, through OSS Insight. Removed stars aren't subtracted and GH Archive misses a few events, so the last value differs from GitHub's count. GitHub's own API only dates the first 40,000 stars.

Methodology
Where the data comes from
- npm: the download counts API for electron and @tauri-apps/cli, and the registry for release dates. Stable versions only, from 1.0.
- OSS Insight: the star history of each repository, computed from the GH Archive record of GitHub events.
- crates.io: the tauri crate, total and daily downloads.
- GitHub: the REST API for electron/electron and tauri-apps/tauri: stars, forks, contributors (anonymous ones included), commits on the default branch, and the search API for issues, pull requests and topics.
- Stack Overflow: the Stack Exchange API, for questions tagged electron and tauri.
- Hacker News: the Algolia search API, stories with the name in their title, without typo tolerance.
- Reddit: the Arctic Shift archive of Reddit, since Reddit's own API needs an account.
A script fetches it all every two weeks, and saves a snapshot of every value. Most sources only give today's value, so the snapshots build the history that the charts show. When a source fails, its previous values stay until the next run.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is Tauri more popular than Electron?
Not by usage. As of October 29, 2026, Electron's npm package gets 3.1× the weekly downloads of Tauri's CLI, has 2.7× the contributors, and 33× the Stack Overflow questions. On GitHub stars they are close: 123,615 for Electron and 112,295 for Tauri. Both passed 100,000 stars: Electron in 8 years, Tauri in 6.5.
Is Tauri better than Electron?
Neither is better in general. Tauri makes much smaller apps that use less memory, and has a Rust backend and mobile support. Electron renders the same on every system because it ships its own Chromium, uses Node.js for the backend, and has a larger ecosystem with more answers to common problems.
Why are Tauri apps smaller than Electron apps?
An Electron app ships its own copy of Chromium and Node.js, so even a small app has an installer of around 80 to 150 MB. A Tauri app uses the webview already installed on the system and compiles its backend to a native Rust binary, so a small app is a few MB.
Do I need to know Rust to use Tauri?
Not for a simple app: the official plugins cover files, dialogs, notifications, updates, deep links and more, and you call them from JavaScript. You need Rust to write your own backend commands, which most real apps end up doing.
Can Tauri make mobile apps?
Yes. Since Tauri 2.0, released in October 2024, Tauri builds iOS and Android apps from the same codebase. Electron only targets desktop: Windows, macOS and Linux.
Which big apps use Electron?
Visual Studio Code, Slack, Discord, Notion, the desktop apps of Figma and 1Password, and many more desktop apps are built with Electron.
How often is this data updated?
Every two weeks, by a script that calls the npm, GitHub, crates.io, Stack Exchange, Hacker News (Algolia) and Arctic Shift (Reddit) APIs. The last update was on October 29, 2026. Each run also saves a snapshot, so the values without a history at the source, like contributors, build one over time.
Selling your Electron or Tauri app?
Whichever you pick, LicenseManager has an SDK for it. Every Stripe purchase creates a license key, emailed to your customer, and the SDK checks it from your app, online or offline. Moving from Electron to Tauri? Your customers stay activated.
